Penalties for telemarketers that violate state or national Do Not Call legislation can be substantial. After October 1, 2003, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) can fine a telemarketer $11,000 per call for calls made to telephone numbers that are listed in the national Do Not Call registry. The FTC expects that over 60 million people will sign up for the national Do Not Call registry.
